Change the default python version in ubuntu

Ubuntu automatically installs python 2.5 and uses it as the default python … I have crashed my system 2 times to solve this .. I wanted to make the default python to version 2.4.

This is the way

before begaining Thanks to (Luiz Rocha (lsdr) ) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=440358

and http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/python/python/685071

First,

edit the /usr/share/python/debian_defaults, changing the default version arg to python2.4

2nd,

$ sudo mv /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/python25
$ sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python2.4 /usr/bin/python

    Thanks for this useful tip. It helped for switching from 2.6 back to 2.5 on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) as well.

    The symlink can be updated with this single command:

    sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/python2.5 /usr/bin/python

    Word of caution. After trying the same process with python 2.6 and 3.1.2, Ubuntu software center would not run. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and the incompatibility of python 2 and 3 doesn’t allow a simple switching like this.

    I set it up to call python 3.1 and the system can’t some of the built in software that depends on python 2. I used the same process above to re-link the python command to python 2.6 and all is fixed.
